12-Step Program for Starting a Successful Temp Business...
Five Easy Ways to Exude More Confidence... Working for the
Weekend... and More.

** 12-Step Program for Starting a Successful Temp Business
By Adrian Newman, Founder of e-Wealth Daily

Yesterday, I talked about how to start a successful temporary employment business. Here's a 12-step program to get you started in a temporary staffing business that you can run from home with few start-up or equipment costs:

  1. Find and attract top people by putting ads in local employment centers, schools, and newspapers — even on bulletin boards at stores and malls. Within 90 days, you should be able to find individuals to meet any employer's needs.

  2. Maintain complete files on their areas of specialization, their attitudes, their availability to work, etc. You can buy a standard recruiting software application (or "talent-management system") from around $500.00 for a single-user license to over $1,000.00 for a multi-user license. It will be instrumental for updating information, pulling profiles on candidates, and running reports on your success. The information you keep is considered "human capital." If you ever decide to sell your business, a potential buyer will be interested in this information
    base from an investment perspective.

  3. Decide if you want to specialize in a specific market. If the best potential for business in your area is in clerical, warehouse, or retail help, focus on candidates who would fit these niches. Become known as the leading recruiter in these fields.

  4. Work toward becoming a "full service" agency, with the ability to meet your client's needs faster or better than your competitors. Inquire what other parts of the hiring process you can facilitate for your clients. Become "customer-centric."

  5. Network in your community. Visit your local chamber of commerce and drop off a package outlining the recruiting services you offer. Become a member, go to monthly meetings, and get to know the business leaders in your community.

  6. Set up your home office so that it projects a professional image. If you don't have a separate entrance or a reception/interview area, offer to meet clients onsite or at a mutually convenient location over tea or coffee. There are also established businesses that are willing to rent out a minimum of unused space to you while you are in the start-up phase of your business.

  7. Develop a process for applicants to contact you and an interview technique that will ensure you select the right interviewee for the right job. If you anticipate an overload of calls or need someone to set appointments for you, you might consider taking advantage of a professional telephone-answering service. Perfect your screening process to determine the following:

    a) If the person you meet is, indeed, an applicant;
    b) How you are going to respond/acknowledge
    different types of applicants;
    c) The type of information you need and how you will get it; and
    d) If or how you are going to test your applicants.

  8. Remember that performing job-specific tests on candidates — achievement, aptitude, physical ability/agility, personality; drug detection, driving... even a medical exam — will cost you money, but, for some clients, these tests are necessary to ensure they are getting first-rate employees. While you can devise your own type of competency test, be sure to contract the
services of a certified professional when administering tests that deal with a candidate's physical or psychological health.

  9. Develop a sales solicitation program that includes cold-calling scripts, closing techniques, an interview process, and a remuneration structure for each new account you bring in.

  10. Other than stationery, a bit of furniture, and a computer, advertising will be a major part of your budget. Remember that finding applicants is easy; simple ads around schools, malls, etc. will draw any number of people looking for work. Convincing businesses that you have the ability to find them a good employee is the hard part. You will need professional- looking sales literature that outlines the services you offer and a small ad that you can reuse in different types of media —Internet, print, direct mail, or e-mail — to generate a response. At first, promote your business to a targeted market, develop and market your strongest benefit, and measure the response you get. Make changes and test your approach again and again until you find a technique that works.

  11. Invest in an efficient and foolproof bookkeeping system to keep track of your business' payroll, client billing, salaries, commissions, income tax, scheduling, and timesheets. Maintain your list of available workers and keep abreast of their employment status.

  12. Other than a standard business license that is required in your state, consider bonding each of your employees to protect yourself from any legal liabilities. Also remember to carry standard business insurance.

** Five Easy Ways to Exude More Confidence
By Doug D'Anna, the "Hundred-Million-Dollar Man"

You can exude confidence in several positive ways. You don’t have to be cocky or arrogant either. You can show the world that you are a confident, assertive person though subtle techniques and methods. Read the following suggestions below to help you let your sense of confidence shine through your actions.

Ways that I can show others that I am a confident person without speaking include:

  1. Posture
Remember your mother telling you to stand up straight all the time while you were growing up? Well, it’s true — good posture is an indication of confidence.
    So don’t slouch!

  2. Body Language
How you express yourself with your physical gestures can say more than words ever can. For example, posture is the first point — slouching does not express confidence. How you communicate with others nonverbally can also express confidence. For example, shake a person’s hand firmly, but warmly. Look a person straight in the eye when you speak to them. Sit upright, facing a person when you are at lunch or in the boardroom. Walk with a clear, strong stride; don’t dawdle or hunch your shoulders back or shuffle your feet. Again, these are small, physical actions that you can take to express your confidence.

  3. Personal Grooming
Let’s face it — we live in a society that places a great deal of importance on appearances. Now, this does not mean that you have to be a model to get by successfully in life. By no means! Some of the most attractive and confident people I know are those who simply take care of their appearance through their grooming habits. It might sound simple, but it really goes a long way in expressing self-confidence. So keep your nails neat and trimmed, your haircut fresh, and your skin glowing — you will be impressed by how such subtle points can really express your confidence levels!

  4. Facial Expressions
Ever have to approach a person who is scowling? Not easy to do, is it? The number one way that you can express your confidence is through your facial expressions. Smile — don’t scowl! You will be amazed at how far it will get you!

  5. Clothes Make for Great Confidence
No, you don’t have to run out and buy a whole new wardrobe just to show the world that you are a confident individual! Not by any means! What I do mean is that much like personal grooming, keeping your clothing neat and tidy will also express to others that you care about yourself and that you are a confident individual. So if those slacks that have been sitting on your bedroom floor look like they can probably get up on their own and walk, it’s time to wash them, not wear them!

They might seem like small things, but by improving these aspects, you will display a confident air that others will pick up on, on a subconscious level. Think about the most confident individuals you know. I am willing to bet that they, too, walk tall and proud with a positive look on their faces.

** Working for the Weekend
By Michael Newman, the "Money Finder"

Ask almost any entrepreneur what their working hours are and they’ll probably give you one quick answer, “I work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

While many entrepreneurs do tend to exaggerate, the principle that they are always working is correct. That doesn’t mean they are standing behind the counter of their shops every hour of every day. It means that every chance they get they are doing something to help further grow and strengthen their businesses.

Now, you already know that going for it on your own and breaking free from the 9-to-5 mold is going to take some hard work. So balancing your time and multitasking are going to be two skills you really need to develop.

For example, when you’re getting started and researching your potential market, use the weekends to their full advantage. You may be breaking free of the regular workday hours, but there is still a large number of the population who work those hours. If your potential customers and clients work during the week, you can observe their buying behaviour on the weekend. This is when the regular working person shops, goes out, visits the park, and gets all of their non-work-related activities done.

Remember, research can be fun and rewarding, and you certainly don’t need to be chasing around strangers with your clipboard and notes. Just go out and mingle, ask questions and keep your eyes and ears open. You could even discover something your regular brainstorming sessions have failed to uncover.

Here are a couple of reasons why you should never stop researching: First off, you could miss something big. An initial idea is great. You see a problem you could solve and you uncover a potential solution. And then you’re well on your way to putting your idea into motion. Well, sometimes there is a big reason why no one has solved this problem before. By conducting your own research you may uncover why no one has made it past this roadblock, and you may even find a new way around it.

Secondly, you could uncover something completely new. There are plenty of accidental inventions that are the result of continuous research. Many of these failed to solve the initial problem they were designed for and instead created a whole new solution simply by chance. Advances in science and technology are loaded with these stories, and there is no reason why this couldn’t happen in the business world as well.

Part of becoming truly successful is having the understanding that no idea is perfect, and that no matter how far you think your plans could go, they can always go beyond your expectations.
